Description
Norethisterone is a synthetic progestin hormone used for the treatment of menstrual disorders such as heavy, painful or irregular periods, endometriosis and as a form of hormonal birth control.
Direction of Use: Norethisterone is typically used to treat menstrual disorders, endometriosis, and as a form of hormonal birth control. It can be taken orally.
Contraindication: Norethisterone is contraindicated in individuals who have a history of blood clots, heart disease, or stroke, or have a history of or current breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers.
Doses and Administration: The usual adult dose for menstrual disorders is 5mg three times a day for 3 to 4 weeks. The usual adult dose for endometriosis is 5mg three times a day for 6 to 9 months. The usual adult dose for birth control is 0.35mg daily.
Side Effects: Common side effects of norethisterone include headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, and irregular periods.
Interactions: Norethisterone may interact with other medications like anticoagulants, oral hypoglycemic agents, and anti-seizure medications. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking.
