Description

Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is a medication used to dissolve gallstones in individuals with a certain type of gallstone called cholesterol stones, and to reduce symptoms caused by the gallstones. It works by decreasing the production of cholesterol in the liver and by helping to break down cholesterol in the gallstones.

Direction of Use: Ursodeoxycholic acid is usually taken orally, typically once or twice a day, with or without food. It is important to follow the dosing instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

Contraindication: Ursodeoxycholic acid should not be used by individuals with a known allergy to the medication or to any of its components. Also, it should be avoided in individuals with primary biliary cirrhosis or primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Doses and Administration: The usual adult dose of Ursodeoxycholic acid is 13-15mg/kg/day, divided in two doses. The dosage may be adjusted based on the patient’s response to the treatment.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Ursodeoxycholic acid include stomach pain, diarrhea, and nausea. More serious side effects can include allergic reactions, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine and severe stomach pain.

Interactions: Ursodeoxycholic acid may interact with other medications such as cholestyramine, colestipol and colesevelam. It is important to tell your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking before starting treatment with Ursodeoxycholic acid.

Warnings and Precautions: Ursodeoxycholic acid may cause a false positive result in certain tests for urine bilirubin. It is important to inform your healthcare provider and any other healthcare professional who may be administering tests that you are taking Ursodeoxycholic acid. Additionally, Ursodeoxycholic acid should be used with caution in individuals with liver disease or gallbladder disease, as it may worsen the condition.
