Description
Telmisartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) medication used to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It works by blocking the action of a hormone called angiotensin II, which can cause blood vessels to constrict and raise blood pressure.
Direction of Use:
Telmisartan is usually taken once a day, with or without food. The usual adult starting dose is 40mg once a day. The dose may be increased to 80mg once a day based on individual response and tolerability.
Contraindications:
Telmisartan is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any component of the medication.
Doses and Administration:
The usual adult starting dose is 40mg once a day. The dose may be increased to 80mg once a day based on individual response and tolerability.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of telmisartan include dizziness, headache, back pain, and diarrhea. Serious side effects include allergic reactions and liver problems.
Interactions:
Telmisartan may interact with other medications, including potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements and salt substitutes.
Warnings and Precautions:
Telmisartan can cause serious side effects, including liver problems. Patients should be advised to stop taking the medication and contact a healthcare provider if they experience signs of liver problems, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or abdominal pain. Telmisartan may also cause a decrease in blood pressure, especially when standing up, which may lead to faintness or dizziness. This medication should be used with caution in patients with kidney impairment or heart failure.
