Description

Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) is a synthetic progestin medication that is used for a variety of indications, including birth control, endometriosis, and menopausal hormone therapy. MPA works by preventing ovulation and thickening cervical mucus, as well as decreasing inflammation and abnormal tissue growth.

Direction of Use: Take as directed by a healthcare professional, typically by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection.

Contraindication: It should not be used in individuals with a history of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, or certain cancers, or in individuals who have any known hypersensitivity to MPA. It should not be used during pregnancy.

Doses and Administration: The usual dose for birth control and endometriosis is 150mg every 3 months and the usual dose for menopausal hormone therapy is 10-20mg/day.

Side Effects: MPA may cause side effects such as headaches, acne, weight gain, and mood changes. If these side effects are severe or persistent, consult a healthcare professional.

Interactions: MPA may interact with other medications, particularly those that affect the blood’s ability to clot. Consult with a healthcare professional before taking MPA if you are taking any other medications.

Warnings and Precautions: MPA is not recommended for women who have a history of breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers. It also does not provide any protection against HIV/AIDS. Consult with a healthcare professional before use, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.
