Description

Metronidazole is an antibiotic medication used to treat various types of bacterial and protozoal infections, such as bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and amoebiasis. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and protozoa.

Direction of use:

Metronidazole is taken by mouth, usually twice a day or as directed by your doctor. It should be taken with a glass of water, on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

Contraindication:

Metronidazole is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to metronidazole or any of its components, and in patients with a history of blood disorders or neurological disorders such as seizures.

Doses and Administration:

The usual adult dose is 400mg – 800mg per day, taken in divided doses, depending on the type and severity of the infection.

Side effects:

Common side effects of metronidazole include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. More serious side effects can occur, such as allergic reactions, blood disorders, and neurological symptoms such as numbness or tingling.

Interactions:

Metronidazole may interact with other medications such as warfarin, disulfiram, lithium, and alcohol. It is important to inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting metronidazole.

Warnings and Precautions:

Patients with liver or kidney disease should be closely monitored while taking metronidazole. It should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Alcohol should be avoided while taking metronidazole and for at least 3 days after completing the treatment, as it can cause a disulfiram-like reaction. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a doctor.
