Description
METRONIDAZOLE is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial and protozoal infections, including pelvic inflammatory disease, endocarditis, and certain types of diarrhea. It can also be used as an alternative treatment for certain types of acne.
Direction of Use: Take METRONIDAZOLE exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. It can be taken with or without food, but it should be taken with a full glass of water.
Contraindication: Do not take METRONIDAZOLE if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients, or if you have a history of blood disorders, liver disease, or neurological disorders.
Doses and Administration: The usual adult dose is 250-500mg orally three times a day for 7-10 days, or as directed by your healthcare provider. The usual pediatric dose is 7.5mg/kg/day in three divided doses for 10 days.
Side Effects: Common side effects of METRONIDAZOLE include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and metallic taste in the mouth. Rare but serious side effects include seizures, allergic reactions, and liver damage.
Interactions: METRONIDAZOLE may interact with alcohol, blood thinners, and certain other medications. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking.
Warnings and Precautions: Do not drink alcohol while taking METRONIDAZOLE, as it can cause severe nausea and vomiting. Do not use METRONIDAZOLE if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as it can cause harm to the fetus or newborn. Do not use METRONIDAZOLE for long periods of time, as it may lead to antibiotic resistance.
