Description
Losartan is a medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and reduce the risk of stroke in individuals with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. It works by blocking the action of a hormone called angiotensin II, which causes blood vessels to constrict and blood pressure to increase.
Direction of Use:
Losartan is typically taken orally once a day, with or without food. The dosage may be adjusted based on the individual’s response to the medication and blood pressure levels.
Contraindication:
Losartan is contraindicated in individuals with an allergy to losartan or any of its components, as well as in individuals with severe liver or kidney disease.
Doses and Administration:
The recommended starting dose of losartan is 50 mg once a day. The dosage may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg once a day if needed.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of losartan include headache, dizziness, and diarrhea. More serious side effects may include chest pain, difficulty breathing, and swelling in the face, throat, or tongue.
Interactions:
Losartan may interact with other medications such as diuretics, potassium supplements, or other blood pressure medications. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting treatment with losartan.
Warnings and Precautions:
Losartan may cause injury or death to a developing fetus. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take losartan. Individuals with a history of angioedema (swelling of the face, throat, or tongue) should not take losartan. It is also important to have regular blood pressure checkups and to inform your healthcare provider of any changes in your blood pressure while taking losartan.
