Diclofenac sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, swelling, and inflammation. It is used to treat a variety of conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual pain, and menstrual cramps.

Direction of use:

Diclofenac sodium is available as a tablet, capsule, and gel, and is taken by mouth, usually 2-3 times a day or as directed by your doctor. It should be taken with food or milk to reduce stomach upset.

Contraindication:

Diclofenac sodium is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to diclofenac or other NSAIDs, and in patients with active peptic ulcer disease or a history of peptic ulcer disease.

Doses and Administration:

The usual adult dose for oral diclofenac sodium is 50-100 mg, two or three times a day. Dose should be individualized and adjusted according to the patient’s response to treatment.

Side effects:

Common side effects of diclofenac sodium include stomach upset, nausea, heartburn, and diarrhea. More serious side effects can occur, such as bleeding from the stomach or intestines, high blood pressure, and kidney damage.

Interactions:

Diclofenac sodium may interact with other medications such as blood thinners, aspirin, and other NSAIDs. It is important to inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting diclofenac sodium.

Warnings and Precautions:

Patients with a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding should use diclofenac sodium with caution. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney and liver function is necessary, especially in older adults or patients with underlying medical conditions. Avoid drinking alcohol, as it increases the risk of stomach bleeding.
